Good Eats

Dear 37-Crazy-People - I am trying to organize a birthday dinner for a friend of mine who has requested a Theme Restaurant. We would like to make reservations (which Jeckyll and Hyde does not take unless you do one of their pre-determined party-type things) and we would like to be able to make rent afterwards (which excludes the very-exciting-looking Ninja restaurant). Tourists I can handle, so long as the food is good and the atmosphere is happy. Tips? Tricks? Sleeping with any managers? Let me know. External brain, go!

Dear Person who needs to find themed food for their friend,
The External Brain has concluded that the Slaughtered Lamb is the best place for you to take your friend. In the unlikely event that you find this unpalatable, you will be able to find something in Times Square.

We assume you plan to eat in the Manhattan area because you didn't specify a location for your themed feast.

There's Ruby Foo's!

Times Square is full of theme places. Hard Rock, ESPN Zone, Planet Hollywood. I'd check them to see if they're in your budget. If not, Why not just go to a Friday's or Applebee's? Happy places, good prices, and the embarrassing birthday songs.

There's always the Starlight Diner, which is a 50's diner with singing waiters and waitresses. Much, much fun. They're having Elvis contests right about now, which will never be a bad time.

I love Ruby Foos! But is that really considered "theme"?

Typically restaurants will ask for a guarantee to make a reservation when the party is an exceptionally large one and does not want to have a group rate (ie, one individual ultimately accountable for all expenses). This is due to the fact that if they're going to hold seats for thirty people then they want to know you're showing up, otherwise they've lost money.

Ruby Foo's? I don't think "overpriced" counts as a theme....


You can always go somewhere where the question "So, how much flair have you got on?" makes the waitstaff burst out in tears. Crying waiters is definitely a theme.

Slaughtered Lamb! I've never been, but have heard it's fun.

In terms of booking, this always depends on how many are coming.

The Slaughtered Lamb is hysterical. I give it big kitschy thumbs up.

Oh, Rodeo Bar on 3rd Ave is freaking amazing, and they have an upstairs that you can usually reserve. It's perfectly sized for 30 people.

They have a stuffed buffalo above the bar! Full-sized!

Okay, guys, I think that'll do it. We have a selection in Times Square, two votes for whatsitcalled, Slaughterhouse 5, and a nice selection. External Brain, Gone!
